South Tyneside is blessed with gorgeous, award winning sandy beaches in UK locations free from hustle and bustle, like hidden treasures. They stretch from the mouth of the Tyne at South Shields beach for miles, Her you'll find an abundance of wildlife, hidden coves, and cycleways

BEACHES/FUNFAIR
The long sandy sweep of Sandhaven, with its backdrop of dunes, is one of the finest beaches in the UK while Littlehaven South Shields beach has panoramic views of the harbour and the ruins of Tynemouth Priory across the mouth of the Tyne. It is an ideal spot for sailing, windsurfing and angling. All the fun of the fair can be enjoyed at Ocean Beach Pleasure Park where there is an exciting choice of white-knuckle thrillers and younger rides also

PICTURESQUE PARKS
Away from the hustle and bustle of the funfair, the seafront parks are the perfect spot for a gentle walk. The recently regnerated Victorian South Marine Park with its boating lake, miniature steam railway, play area, paddling pool and amazing gathering of swans and ducks is great for families. Nearby North Marine Park is the perfect setting for pitch and putt, watching a game of bowls or enjoying a stroll and taking in the great views.

MARSDEN ROCK VISITOR ATTRACTION
Over time, the mighty waves of the great North Sea have carved out caves, cliffs and stacks, leaving one of the main tourist attractions in the area - the breathtaking Marsden Bay, dominated by one of the most magnificent rock formations in Britain. The 100-foot high rock is a bird sanctuary and home to dozens of sea birds. Marsden Grotto - a good bar/restaurant set in a cave overlooking this is worth a visit (a lift whiskes you there and back.)

CATHERINE COOKSON
If Dame Catherine Cookson is more your thing, visit the excellent South Shields Museum and Art Gallery which chronicles her life, awards and personal effects of Britain's best selling author, who was born in South Tyneside and used the area as an inspiration for her many novels (indeed this setting has become a place of pilgrimage for thousands of devotees every year coming from around the world.) Tours are available.

Directions & Getting Here 

Arriving By Car: The A1 (M), A19 (via the Tyne Tunnel) and A194 major trunk roads lead into South Tyneside where they link up with a modern network of dual carriageways that give access to all parts. There is a variety of short and long stay parking areas and parking

Arriving By Train: Newcastle's Central Station is on the main East Coast raliway line between London and Edinburgh and there are regular services from the Midlands and the West. The effiecent Metro system connects from here to South Shields and many parts of the NE.

Arriving By Bus/Coach: There are 58 local bus and 4 coach services to be found here, and a list of the possible destinations. Please enquire for a list of local transport operators.

Nearest Airport: Newcastle's International Airport is just 15 miles away and has a fast, efficient Metro rail service which can take you from within the terminal right into the heart of Hebburn, Jarrow and South Shields.

Additional Details 

WESTOE VILLAGE
Westoe Village (a 5 minute walk from the property,) is a historic, peaceful oasis in the heart of South Shields, and has links with several famous people. It was well known to Catherine Cookson during her youth and the setting for several of her books.

LOCAL TOURS AND TRAILS
There is also a Catherine Cookson Trail, taking in the author's birthplace, former home and many locations used in filming the many adaptions of her novels. Other tours are also available, which take in Bede, Books and Romans, Roman Heritage, Maritime Trail and an Art Trail (during the summer the South Tyneside Tourism Bus operates on a daily basis linking all of South Tyneside's attractions together, making it even easier to get around.

SOUTER LIGHTHOUSE
Another first for South Tyneside is Souter Lighthouse. When it was switched on in 1871, it was the first in the world specifically constructed for electric illumination by carbon arc lamps. Today, in this National Trust property, you can explore the Engine Rooms, the keeper's cottage and enjoy outstanding views from the top of the tower. For those less able bodied a CCTV camera shows the views from ground floor level.

SOUTH TYNESIDE SUMMER FESTIVAL
The spirit of South Tyneside is nowhere better experienced than in the annual Summer Festival with 3 months of fabulous free fun and entertainment for all ages and tastes. The festival runs over June, July and August and starts off with the colourful opening parade. The Sunday Spectaculars feature a selection of big name bands in Bents Park on the seafront (10 minutes walk from the property.)

ROMAN FORT ARBEIA AND BEDE'S WORLD
The Roman Fort of Arbeia at South Shields was occupied as early as AD80 and is one of the most important sites in Britain. There is a life-size replica of the West Gate of the fort which was built from remains found on the site and is the only one of its kind to be rebuilt on its original site. Another local attraction is Bede's World in nearby Jarrow - a museum of early medieval Northumbria and extraordinary life of Venerable Bede (AD 673-735)
